A theatre and supper fundraising event was held in March at the New Diorama Theatre, Euston, London. The evening includes a performance of the play ‘Trap Street’ by Kandinsky, who have twice won the Sunday Times Playwriting Award.
Forty four people came to the New Diorama Theatre at Euston, for a supper and theatre evening that raised a magniifcent £1390 towards the new classroom we are hoping to provide for the primary school in the children’s village.
The auditorium was full to bursting and the audience clearly enjoyed and appreciated the powerful and thought provoking piece of theatre from award winning company Kandinsky. ‘Trap Street’ is their latest production - it follows the fortunes of a community from the 1960s through 50+ years of housing issues - changing policies and their implications and consequences for the residents of a particular estate.
A buffet supper with wine and lots of conversation and discussion followed. Our veteran organisers Lawry and Patti ensured everyone was well catered for. Lawry and Mark and Patti and Richard provided the supper and wine, various supporters contributed desserts – we are very grateful to them all for their generosity. It was also a great chance to meet and catch up with people and to update with friends from Zimbabwe and share news about the village. Watch this space for future events!

Big Simba, who will be 21 in August, came to St Marcellin’s in January 2005 and was the first of the St Marcellin’s children to go away to school where he worked so hard and successfully achieved his A ‘levels.
Simba is currently boarding with a step uncle and attending Midlands University in Harare to study social work. This higher education is being funded by supporters of St Marcellin’s village. He has just finished a three month attachment and got to see other children’s homes first-hand.
We have been given permission to share part of a moving email he recently sent to Norman and Sybil on their return from a break in South Africa to see their families. It sums up perfectly the work of St Marcellin’s and exactly what Norman and Sybil offer to the children who stay with them. His words are repeated here exactly as they were written.
"Hello mom,
I hope you and dad had a good rest. This end we good and we can’t complain. I now see that the outside world is not a bed of roses. It needs hard working people and creative minds not to sit on your hands the whole day. Thank you very much both you and dad for awakening and teaching me concrete life principles cause without them I would be finding it really hard to cope with real life situations...
I finished my attachment in March. It was a three month placement. It was just hectic at the department. It was an eye opener to me. That’s where I learnt that the work you do is a lot. Most important thing among the rest is that the work you do was much praised than other homes in Zimbabwe. St Marcellin is the best place a child in need of care can be placed. You got the best home facilities- clothing, food, shelter. I thank God I was looked after by you...
God Bless you and Dad,
Lots of love
Big Son"
There are many ways you can help the children of St Marcellin’s. You can volunteer time or skills to help us with fundraising events, or make a one off or regular donation. At this time donations are particularly required for setting up the new primary school (desks and chairs, books and life skills workshops), and to pay for teaching staff.
Alternatively, sign up to our email list. We will not share your personal data with any one else. See our privacy policy for more information.
All donations (with the exception of bank transfer charges) go 100% to the children’s village to support the children.
